Poland shipyard sale falls through again: government

WARSAW — Poland Friday said it had again failed to sell off two struggling shipyards, after receiving tenders for only a slice of what was on offer, three months after a deal with Qatari investors fell through.

The Polish treasury said that it had been able to attract buyers for just a 10.5-million-zloty (2.5-million-euro, 3.8-million-dollar) share of the 119 million zloty assets of the yard at Szczecin in the northwest.

The sale of another yard, at Gdynia in the north, was more successful but still a disappointed -- only 90 million zloty of its 300-million-zloty value found buyers.

The treasury now plans to organise an auction for the unsold assets.
Neither yard is set to continue producing ships.

Poland legislates to prevent glorification of communism and its symbols

Twenty years after Eastern Europe toppled statues of Lenin, the Polish Government is about to finish the job by making it all but impossible to wave the red flag — even in jest.

Up to two years in jail await anyone glorifying communism according to an amendment to Article 256 of the Polish criminal code — the race-hate article — which is likely to come into force next year. The ban outlaws “the production, distribution, sale or possession ... in print, recordings or other means of fascist, communist or other symbols of totalitarianism”. So if you planned to sing the Internationale while marching down the centre of Warsaw to the old communist headquarters — now housing financial services companies — forget it.

U.S., Polish Officials Agree to Terms for Stationing American Troops in Poland

WARSAW, Poland —  A Polish official says the U.S. and Poland have agreed on terms for stationing American troops and military equipment in the eastern European country.

The move is a prerequisite for deploying U.S. Patriot missiles to Poland next year and a possible future missile defense site.

Defense Ministry spokesman Robert Rochowicz said Thursday Prime Minister Donald Tusk's government must still approve it. He didn't say when that would happen or give other details.

In addition, Poland has expressed willingness to host elements of a new U.S. missile-defense system that would replace a scrapped Bush-era plan.

Poland ETF anyone?

Exchange-traded funds (ETFs) can slice and dice stock markets in a multitude of ways.

The latest in single-country ETFs is the Market Vectors Poland ETF (PLND-N25.32----%) launched Wednesday on the NYSE Arca Exchange. It’s the first pure play on Poland’s growing economy.

Poland's economic expansion – its GDP grew 4.9 per in 2008 – is driven by a growing domestic consumer market with little exposure to exports. While most of its peers in Central and Eastern Europe GDPs declined in the second quarter of 2009, Poland’s GDP grew 1.4 per cent.

“In 2009, Poland’s economy is projected to expand, making it the only country in the European Union to report positive economic growth this year,” says ETF provider Van Eck. See investment case for Poland.

Critics call Poland Patriot missile plan a symbolic gesture

Germany-based unit is likely to be sent as early as the spring
HEIDELBERG, Germany — Soldiers from U.S. Army Europe’s Patriot missile battalion could be deploying to Poland as soon as the spring for a six-month rotation as part of the Obama administration’s new missile defense plan in Eastern Europe.

But critics say the Patriot deployment — the first to put U.S. troops in Poland — is nothing more than a symbolic, diplomatic gesture.

U.S. Army Europe officials were in Warsaw working on the agreement shortly before Vice President Joe Biden traveled to Poland last month in the wake of the White House decision to change the Bush administration’s missile defense plan. Biden reassured Polish leaders that the new plan — although scrapping putting long-range missile interceptors in Poland — did not leave the country out of the loop. And he announced that a U.S. Patriot missile battery of about 100 soldiers would soon arrive on Polish soil.

Polish zloty set to appreciate

WARSAW, Nov 26 (Reuters) - Poland's zloty will probably be strengthening ahead, a member of the central bank's Monetary Policy Council (MPC) Jan Czekaj said on Thursday.

"It seems that the zloty will be showing a tendency to appreciate...the zloty is connected with growth. When the economy will be recovering, the zloty will be appreciating," Czekaj told TVN CNBC.
He added the zloty even at 3.8 against the euro would not be harmful for exports, compared with current levels of about 4.10.

Polish c.bank keeps rates flat, sees 2010 CPI down

WARSAW, Nov 25 (Reuters) - Poland's central bank kept interest rates unchanged on Wednesday, in line with market expectations, as inflation remains under control and macroeconomic data point towards a steady recovery.

Inflation may rise temporarily in the near term due to base effects but should ease significantly in 2010, the bank's Monetary Policy Council (MPC) said in a statement.

The zloty and bonds were unchanged after the rate decision, which all 27 analysts polled by Reuters had predicted.

WWII survivor seeing Polish rescuer after 65 years

NEW YORK - A Holocaust survivor and the Polish Christian who risked his life to save him are especially grateful this Thanksgiving season: The two men will be reunited for the first time in 65 years.

Joseph Bonder, 81, was going to John F. Kennedy International Airport on Wednesday afternoon to welcome Bronislaw Firuta, 83, from Wroclaw, Poland.

The two men haven't seen each other since the Soviet Army liberated Ostra Mogila, Poland, in 1944, although they have been in touch by phone and letters since the 1950s.

Firuta was 15 when he and his family helped hide 13-year-old Bonder and his 18-year-old sister, Joan, for three years as the Nazis searched for Jews in the town. The two families knew each through Joan, a teacher who had Firuta as a student.

Two of the three segments are to be present on the stage of Royce Hall, where the audience will join them in bleachers on stage. It's part of the attempt to transform the event into a kind of church service. The second part, moves to a rehearsal hall downstairs - the first time, Fret said, that the space has been used as a performance space. For Part III, what Fret describes as a "coda," the audience heads back up onto the Royce Hall stage. The entire event lasts about three hours.

Polish road-building seen boosting growth, jobs

WARSAW, Nov 25 (Reuters) - Ambitious plans to modernise Poland's ramshackle road network and other communist-era infrastructure are helping to boost economic growth, create sorely needed jobs and cushion battered construction firms.

The infrastructure projects, co-funded by the European Union, are a key reason why Poland is the only member of the 27-nation EU to avoid recession in the global financial crisis, economists say. They may also boost support for the government.

Approaching Russia From a New Angle

Published: November 25, 2009

With the enlargement of the E.U. to the former Communist countries of Eastern Europe, there is now an opportunity for two other former enemies, Poland and Germany, to complete the stability of a reunited Europe. “If Poland and Germany established a much deeper relationship, it could break the E.U.’s logjam with Russia,” said Jacek Kucharczyk, director of the Institute of Public Affairs in Warsaw. “That could have far-reaching positive consequences for democratization among the E.U.’s eastern neighbors.”

A new relationship between Germany and Poland is crucial because these two countries have historically been so affected by Russia, usually through war. Over the centuries, Germany and Russia vied with each other to dominate Poland. But Germany and Russia also fought so bitterly during World War II to conquer each other. Even though Poland is now a member of NATO and the E.U., Germany is reunited and the Soviet Union no longer exists, this turbulent and complex triangular relationship continues to fester.
