Polish ruling party likely to win presidential election

Poland’s ruling centrist Civic Platform (PO) remains likely to win a presidential election due this autumn despite Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s decision to quit the race, opinion polls showed yesterday.

Tusk, Poland’s most popular politician, announced on Thursday he would remain as head of the government in order to complete economic reforms.

In Poland, the prime minister and government hold most power but the president can veto laws and has a say in foreign policy. President Lech Kaczysnki has annoyed Tusk’s government by blocking health, pension and media reforms.

PO has not yet named its presidential candidate but senior party officials say the frontrunners are Bronislaw Komorowski, the speaker of the lower house of parliament, and Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski. The polls showed either man could defeat Kaczynski.
